Cardiff Food Alliance – help us fix the food chain

Help us to begin Fixing the Food Chain in Cardiff

People in Cardiff and across the UK are waking up to the fact that the meat and dairy industry produces more climate-changing emissions than all the planes, cars and lorries on the planet – and that a hidden chain links animals in British factory farms to rainforest destruction in South America.

Initiated by the Cardiff Friends of the Earth local group, the Cardiff Food Alliance is organising a month of action in April 2010 to begin to Fix this Food Chain, and we need your help!

We’re going to:

  • Work with farmers, get their support and promote farmers’ markets
  • Promote local food producers, cooperatives, allotments and community gardens
  • Work with Oxfam and the World Development Movement on a political hustings before the election
  • Work with Transition Towns Cardiff to show films that expose the broken food chain
  • Promote other food-related activities

We’re already partnering with Transition Towns Cardiff, who are showing food-related films throughout April, promoting the Riverside and Roath farmers’ markets and supporting an event by the Canton Community Gardens group. But the more people we can get on board with the Fix the Food Chain month the better – so we’re inviting you to hold an event during April (or let us know about your plans) and we can help to promote it through our networks.

We will be producing promotional materials for the month, and advertising events. In return for being part of the Fix the Food Chain month, you can help to promote all the other events that are happening. The more people we can get organising events the more of an impact the month will have!

We’re especially interested in targeting different parts of the food chain. Friends of the Earth focus on food policy, whereas Tranistion Towns is all about building and strengthening community links.  We want to help promote all the positive ways that the people of Cardiff have found to build a more sustainable food chain.

If you can’t organise an event in April, we’d still love to hear from you – if you have events planned in the future you’d like to publicise then this could be a good place to do it.

    Good news!

As said above, Cardiff Friends of the Earth and the World Development Movement are working with Oxfam Cymru to organise a Hustings (a pre-election political public meeting) in Cardiff North.

Oxfam Cymru is leading on this, and we now also have the support of:
    – Christian Aid Wales
    – RSPB Cymru, and
    – Stop Climate Chaos Cymru

And it is still growing! A large coalition = politicians agree to attend.

If you’d like to add your support please let Adam know! Thanks.

The coalition around the political meeting is still growing and is now also supported by:

    – CAFOD Wales (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development)
    – Cardiff Transition Project North
    – WWF Cymru

With so many people involved, I hope we will be able to persuade the politicians to come to our event! Fingers crossed and lets hope we get more organisations on board. Please don’t hesitate to contact info@foecardiff.co.uk if you would like to support this meeting.

    Cheers,
    Raoul
